Two-stage High Pressure Vortex Pump

The vortex pump is a type of centrifugal pump, primarily composed of an impeller, pump body, and pump cover. The impeller is a disc with many radial small blades located along its outer edges. The corresponding part of the pump casing has an annular flow channel with a constant cross-section, which is divided into two sections—suction and discharge—by a baffle. These sections are connected to the pump’s suction and discharge pipes.

When the liquid inside the pump rotates with the impeller, centrifugal force is generated, causing the liquid to be thrown outward into the annular flow channel of the pump casing. Under the constraint of the channel’s shape, the liquid is forced to flow back, entering the next set of blades from the root of the previous blades. Therefore, the trajectory of the liquid between the blades and the annular channel forms a spiral pattern relative to the stationary pump casing, while it forms a backward spiral path relative to the rotating impeller. The pump is named "vortex pump" because of this spiral vortex motion of the liquid. The liquid continuously enters the spaces between the blades to gain energy before being discharged through the outlet.

The operation of the vortex pump is somewhat similar to that of a multi-stage centrifugal pump; however, unlike centrifugal pumps, it does not have energy-converting components such as a volute or guide vanes. The vortex pump transfers energy to the liquid through multiple consecutive actions, which enables it to generate higher pressure. During this energy transfer process, due to multiple impacts of the liquid, energy loss is relatively high, resulting in lower efficiency, typically ranging from 20% to 50%. The vortex pump is good suited for applications that require low flow rates (1-40 m³/h) and relatively high heads (up to 250 meters), such as fire pumps, gasoline pumps on aircraft refueling trucks, small boiler feedwater pumps, etc.


Applications

The W-type vortex pump is used for pumping clean water and liquids with physical and chemical properties similar to water. The liquid temperature should not exceed 60°C. It is commonly used in boiler feedwater systems and has broad applications in industries such as shipbuilding, light textiles, chemicals, metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing, aquaculture, fixed fire pressure regulation, heat exchange units, and agricultural remote irrigation systems.
